Methodist Moment #8 Did You Know... That when we say, while reciting
the Apostles' Creed, that we believe in "the holy catholic church" we
are making no specific reference to the Roman Catholic Church?
The word 'catholic' (not capitalized) simply means universal and open
to all. The United Methodist Church is indeed a universal,
worldwide denomination that shares a cooperative ministry and mission
with all Christians, whatever their church affiliation and wherever
they may be.
Sunday
School Classes Starting
Sunday, January 7th, Adult and Youth Sunday Schools will combine their
classes for an inter-generational study on United Methodist Social
Principles. The class will meet in the SoJourners classroom at
9:30am.
Everyone is
welcome!
Please let Joyce Fisher or Gail know if you would like to attend this class. Those not interested in participating will have the opportunity to attend the Du Com class. NEWSLETTER DEADLINE I have
found since working with the newsletter, that
we need a deadline for articles and news items in order to print the
newsletter, fold and give the Post Office enough time for everyone to
receive their newsletter by the first of the month.
February 26th --
Monday
(Like any office, should the 24th fall on a weekend, the deadline would be the following Monday.)
I love receiving articles and info concerning
activities going on at the church. We want everyone to know what
is going on in OUR
church. Please keep me informed.

GREETERS/USHERS NEEDED(Friends Eating and Sharing
Together)
These
fellowship groups are made up of six to eight people getting together
over a month to share a meal. There are TWO categories:
HOME and RESTAURANT. (There will be different sign up sheets, but
it is acceptable to sign up for both.) The groupings will be
randomly selected for a 3 month rotation, then mixed up for another 3
months.
The final rotation ends in
November. This FEAST
fellowship will start in MARCH.
What a fun way to start the new year! Any questions, please
contact Linda Brake.

CALENDARS. Saint
Valentine On February 14th, many Christians
celebrate Valentine's Day. Valentine, a Roman priest, was made a
martyr in 270 A.D. because of his love of Christ and his persistence in
the Christian way of life. He often ended his kind and helpful
letters to others with the words "Your Valentine." Later, as
Christians remembered and honored this saint, they signed their letters
of affection with the same words.
St. Valentine
is considered by some Christians to be
the patron saint of lovers and the helper of those who are unhappily in
love. Some Christians call St. Valentine's Day a feast day.
It seems fitting for all Christians to make it a "love feast"
day. Make it a day when we joyfully share our love and
appreciation for our dear friends, family members and all those who are
part of the family of God.
40 Days
to Spiritual Health Lent is the 40 day period between
Ash Wednesday (February 21st) and Easter (April 8th).
Traditionally, it has been a time when Christians re-examine their
spiritual life and try to discern the quality of their relationship
with God.
There are many
individual approaches to
strengthening the spiritual life, including: choosing to fast,
praying more often, reading the Bible and devotional literature,
engaging more often in public worship, serving God more intensely in
the world.
We miss the
mark if we focus only on our
desires. Lent ought to be a time of deeper dedication to God and
seeking ways in which we can help to further God's kingdom on Earth.
